J&S Drilling undertook an environmentally sensitive Caustic Heave Investigation, using PQ Triple Tube drilling methodology.

The licenced driller and crew used a Jacro 200 and an Edson 3000 to undertake PQ Triple Tube core drilling. Above all the drilling program needed to support a caustic heave investigation study in close proximity to, and under existing infrastructure.

A key challenge was getting a drill rig into a restricted (tight) access location under existing infrastructure. Allowing for one of the sites which had only four (4) metres of vertical clearance.

Four (4) locations were drilled and sampled with a grout abandonment of the borehole to ensure full reinstatement. Grout mix is a SG 1.52 Low Heat with 5% Bentonite. Installed in the borehole using a tremmie pipe methodology delivering grout to the bottom of the borehole and back filled to the surface. The Bentonite additive assists in retaining any free water within the grout mix and reducing slumping.

In conclusion, the project required customised operational procedures and full environmental compliance due to the caustic contamination.
